In collaboration with Sichuan Provincial Architectural Design and Research Institute, (SADI), Pelli Clarke & Partners won the international competition to design the Yibin Station Gateway Development masterplan. This project addresses the potential status of Yibin Station Gateway Development as a major transportation hub. Two new high-speed rail lines are planned to cross the city in Yibin. It will make the city an important crossroads between the four major urban centers in Western China. This design is inspired by the bamboo forest nearby and its rhizomatic roots system. The brief called for Yibin to be transformed from a passing station into a destination. Pelli Clarke and Partners’ winning proposal capitalizes on green spaces, density, and intensity in the urban environment. A central park is featured in the project that preserves the topography of the city and the karst landforms made by the Yangtze River’s tributaries. The multi-layered green infrastructure includes a number of multifunctional pavilions as well as flexible workplaces. The cultural museum is the main focal point. It was created to “showcase Yibin’s rich history and rich heritage in ancient poetry”.
